Having worked as a teacher and gardener and in the voluntary sector as drugs counsellor and HIV support worker, I started training to be a Medical Herbalist 21 years ago. I have been practising in and around Bath ever since qualifying in 1987. I have continued teaching – other complimentary practitioners, courses for the public, student herbalists and occasional lectures at Universities and Medical Schools. In 1994 I completed a post-graduate degree in Complementary Health Studies and have been involved in research ever since. I have been on the council of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and the accreditation board. I worked for two years in a GP practice providing herbal medicine. In 1998 we opened Herbs for Health with my partner Maggie MacMillan. As well as seeing patients I enjoy running courses for the public and organising the training clinic. This allows us to provide low cost treatment for patients and clinical experience for students from various university courses. I am currently working on a clinical trial of herbal treatment of the menopause and am external examiner for the herbal medicine degree at the University of Central Lancashire. |
